Problems playing a multi -region DVD

I have a Sony DVD player/recorder. RDR-HXD560

I recently bought a DVD. Format PAL on DVD -R. Multi-region '0' (free)

My Sony says ' This disk cannot be played'

My player is set up for PAL so thats OK

Can anyone help please? Maybe my player needs a hack ?

This might work, but it looks like you'll need a second remote.

Sounds like the movie was recorded on crap media which the Sony doesn't like.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Yup, DVD-R is a recordable media (home burns, very rarely if ever used for commercial disks*).

Either the player cannot read DVD-R discs at all, or as you say it's poor media.

*I can only think of a few small distributors that ever used them to do "burn on demand" releases.

Opps looks like you've bought a duff disk, if you are lucky you bought if from a store and not dodgy Tony down the market.

Do you have many retail stores in your neck of the woods that sell movies on DVD-R ? ;)

  • Its a company that supplies copies of TV films on licence which were never produced for the comercial market. Thus the use of a DV-RW.This disc plays fine on my mates player ?

Ah, you said DVD-R, not DVD-RW, there are loads of compatibility issues with DVD-RW's and top make players way more than there is with DVD-R's. I've a top make player here won't touch DVD-R+ or RW's, yet the cheapo 10 year old Cyberhome will play anything I chuck at it.

I'd say your Sony is being picky.

Don't know about now, but they were making their DVD players that way on purpose back in the early 2000's in an attempt to slow piracy.
It got to the stage they were tweaking them so much that a lot of standard movie discs wouldn't work either.
It didn't help them at all in the end which was a shame as their early equipment (eg, 80's and very early 90's) had a good name, but the modern day Sony stuff is cheap crap and isn't worth two bob IMHO.
