Barclays fraud Dept going into overdrive

Hello - three times in as many days have I had transactions declined by the bank - two internet shops (a supermarket and take away) declined by verified by visa and a payment on my phone bill declined and card blocked until I replied to texts.

The third one, fair enough, was resolved quickly but I spent over half an hour on the phone trying to sort the other two. Barclays are saying it's as the transaction was from a different IP address, but I was using my phone, which will always have a different IP address.

Is this happening to anyone else, and how do you over come it? It's driving me nuts . .

Cheers

Rebecca

PS - I know it's to prevent fraud but when someone spent money (£50) on a Danish mobile phone credit it was me who noticed not the bank - so I don't hold out much hope here either

Sounds like they've tweaked their strategy a little. I would expect it to settle down before long.
  • I had about 18 months of Barclays declining my monthly debit card payments to my Natwest and Mint (both RBS) credit cards. Each time the counter fraud team said it was because of a high percentage of fraud with card repayments but that it would settle down after the system learned that it was a regular payment for me. Pointing out Id been doing the same for 4 years already left them unable to answer why it was flagging them with the call ending on a "hopefully wont happen next month". After 18 months it simply stopped doing it.
  • Paying for stuff via a mobile phone internet connection tends to trigger my cards fraud check as well (not Barclays). Verified by visa ends in the call xxx number message. Occasionally you can fix it by just replying to a text which is perfect but most of the time you have to phone and answer questions to unlock it.

I've had this issue numerous times. The worst was when went to a small Asda, bought some lunch, then went to Sainsburys to get some petrol. I had filled my car up, went to pay and Barclays had blocked the card. Obviously, the staff at Sainsburys didn't believe me and it was the most embarassing thing ever. I had to use their phone to call Barclays to get the block removed.

Suffice to say, I'm not with Barclays anymore, and always use Pay at Pump now.
  • I complained that I was not notified about the block. They told me that notifying customers is not policy! Whilst they compensated me £70 i did not want to bank with a company with this policy, nor did I really believe the response. Emailed the ceo and found out that they should text, but in my case the system had failed. So basically they lied. My advice, make a fuss.

Stupid, inappropriate card blocking is becoming ever more frequent. And don't believe them when they say "it's to protect you". It isn't.

You did the right thing in ditching Barclays. It's the only way these chumps will get the message.

Well done, you've replied to a post that's nearly a year old and a poster who hasn't logged on since January.
  • I had exactly the same problem with Lloyds a few years ago and not only was it embarrassing to have my card refused my weekly online grocery shop was stopped several times too which was really inconvenient. I rang to speak to their fraud department who were quite rude when I asked how fraud could be suspect on goods going to my home address telling me that they would decide if a transaction looked safe or not! I moved banks pretty swiftly problem solved
  • Never had an issue, use them every other year for interest free, used them numerous times in Europe and the US no problem either. Guessing you're doing something that flags their alerts or unlucky. Barclays are my favourite cc provider, good deals and excellent mobile app.
