Had car crash day after moved house - hadn't told insurers yet - is this a problem?

Options
Hello - advice please?

Had a fender bender today (not my fault: I stopped to let someone out - they hesitated - traffic was approaching so I pulled forward - at the exact same time they pulled forward and hit me)

I am living with my boyfriends parents for a few days until we move into our new flat. We moved out Sunday - prang occurred on Monday. My boyfriend told me not to tell the insurance company. I have royal mail redirection so it doesn't matter if the send letters to the old place.

But in my conversation with the driver who hit me I was upset - I told him I've just moved and this is such a bad time, need the car etc. etc. - if I keep schtum what if the insurance company find out? Is there any risk to telling them I've moved out?

If I say I moved out on Monday I can't prove it as it's official - the tenancy ended, there was a check out inventory. I haven't changed my addresses with any companies yet though.

I'm just worried keeping quiet will backfire.

If the other person has contacted their or your insurer you need to inform them right away.

If you dont tell them about the accident and that your moving they could cancel the policy. You dont want to risk that.

If they find out about the incident from the other party they will wonder why you have not informed them. Then 2+2 = 37 and wonder what else your have not told them.

I would be worried that mail maybe sent as do not redirect..

I bet there will be different opinions on that.

My advice is to be honest.

The worst case if you lie is insurance refuse to pay so not only do you have a big bill but also you now have to declare FOREVER that you had insurance cancelled basically because you lied. You will find insurance expensive and diffifcult for a very long time and use of internet engines impossible and have to phone for every quote.

Just tell them you hadn't moved yet and we're staying somewhere else temporarily for a few nights. People are allowed to stay with friends, park at hotels, park at airports etc. without notifying the insurance so I think the operational word is that this was temporary and that's why you hadn't informed them.

I would expect this to go 50/50.
Not sure why you are saying it's not your fault. It sounds like you both hit each other at the same time, but of course these I'm only going on a few sentences.

Well. Which is it? Tell the insurance company you have moved. If you moved only a few days ago it is not wholly unreasonable not to have changed all addresses immediately.
As a practical matter have you sorted out a redirect for your mail with the Post Office?
Best to inform the insurers of the accident straight away.

Given that you moved to somewhere temporary the previous day, over a weekend, I really wouldn't be losing sleep. It's perfectly acceptable to have your car somewhere else than at "your home address" for a few days - it's what cars are for, after all - and the incident wasn't even at your new address.

If it was a much higher risk area, and the car had been stolen overnight after a week or three, then - yes - there may be an issue.

Agreed on the 50/50, though. You both proceeded when you didn't know for sure the way was clear.

I'm not sure what the issue is? Just tell the insurer.
