It is not the smell - any one can put up with a smell. It is the permanent sore throat that the OP has that is the problem.

The OP never said permanent...they said they had had one from 11am but to be honest, I got that yesterday and I don't smoke and didn't come into contact with anyone that does.

They did however say "The office and now my clothes pong"

That's not nice at all so again, it is off putting to staff in the office and potential new clients. This should be tackled by approaching the firm next door.

Causing a fuss or ironically 'kicking up a stink' two days into a new job while blaming the new employer is not the way to go (IMHO) especially as it doesn't seem to be the employers fault at all. They should take it up with the firm whose employees are at fault though.

I think it is worth speaking to HR about your discomfort. If enough people agree then the building management might consent to building a smoking shelter further from the building. I have worked in a number of office blocks and they all have a large area away from the main doors for the smokers to congregate in, which is sheltered and has ash-trays. You might find that even the smokers would prefer such a solution.

    .

It will be permanent if she is subjected to the smoke every day. How do you think it is going to go away? The same thing happened to me decades ago before smoking was banned from offices.

You got a sore throat because of a virus, the OP didn't.

Really? So everyone who smokes has a permanent sore throat? Wonder how they manage to do it, must be even worse for them, given it is 1st hand and all....

Remote doctor too I notice. Good skill that.

You exaggerated and sorry I wasn't appreciative of that.

Where did I say that everyone who smoked had a permanent sore throat (now who is exaggerating)?

Certain people like me and the OP will get sore throats through passive smoking.

What is your sore throat caused by if not a virus if you haven't been near any smokers?

And by the same token how can you be absolutely certain that the OP's issue wasn't a virus?

You can't. It is Schrodinger's Cat isn't it?

Nice that you accepted you had exaggerated and then tried the same thing back at me. Very "I know you are so what am I?" Didn't realise this was the school playground.

If it is, there's more than one person playing semantics.

Where did I accept that I had exaggerated? I said that you had exaggerated. I think you read what you want to read rather than what is written. I can't be bothered to reply to someone who doesn't read what is written.

    Play time is over now.

Good luck OP, it is a very difficult problem to solve especially if you have just started a new job.

Well it is clear to anyone reading this that you did. Always a shame to see when people can't just admit they made a mistake.

Just as your advice the OP should "look for a new job as soon as possible" after one day, in this job market and without trying anything else was way off the mark.

I will give you credit for saying 'good luck OP' though. I just hope they take the right approach to get this resolved.
