How is contacting the landlord going to make any difference to the sub letting issue? would more likely just annoy them.

The OP stated that communication via the LA was dysfunctional. It is a perfectly reasonable request to contact the L in that case who will probably confirm that taking a lodger and subletting are not the same thing.

If you reckon you already have permission then asking again is weakening your hand as they can say no. Do you have any written history, emails perhaps, of your asking and them agreeing to let someone else live there? I'd write to the agent explain how they gave permission, who gave it, how they mixed up the contracts etc and that you were given permission. I'd also ask in writing for the landlord's address, I do not think email counts if you want to pursue it formally. Then write to the landlord so he knows it was the agents mistake. If you think putting things in writing is a waste of time think again as failure to do so got you into this mess in the first place. When dealing with letting agents (landlords or indeed anything important) you need to cover your back in writing. Next time ask for a copy of the tenancy agreement upfront and copy it before signing. Ask for both copies to be signed so you can keep one on the spot. If they refuse to do that photograph the relevant pages before they take it away!

When you get someone in make sure they are a lodger and not a fellow tenant.
