Ni contributions demand

I just had a demand for ni contributions but I am not self employed, not been for years and have told them so. No doubt about it I informed HM c+R when I stopped being S.E. Before that I had a low earnings exemption.
Now this threatening letter saying a private debt collection company may contact me or we may collect what you owe through your ta code........
I thought ni contributions were voluntary when your S.E?

What happens if they say I didnt tell them I stopped? I cant prove it.
Will they really chase me for NI? Its not like owing tax or something is it?0 -
I think it is like owing tax, now I think about it.
How much are they chasing.
Perhaps you could ask them to set up a payment plan.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

o3 numbers are okay to ring, I don't know how much they are though.
If you have a look at Saynoto0870 you might find an 0800 free phone number.
I don't think the OP is looking for excuses Agrinall to be honest, I think they are just momentarily panicking.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

More information might help to highlight possible causes:
During which tax years were you self employed?
Did you register as a sole trader? Did you immediately complete the exemption form for Class 2 NI on the grounds of low earnings?
Did you get annual reminders to complete tax returns?
If you completed self assessments, did you put the date you ceased trading into the relevant box? Did you stop getting annual reminders?
The Class 2 exemption lasts for a few years, after which you need to make a new claim if relevant.
Have you changed your address since you stopped being self employed?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
