Where to spend Christmas in Australia - NSW / Melbourne

Hi folks,
I'm looking for some inspiration for an upcoming Australia trip.
Me and my girlfriend will be travelling between Sydney and Melbourne around this time in December, giving us the option of spending Christmas somewhere between the two cities, in Melbourne itself, or perhaps somewhere near Melbourne (maybe along the Great Ocean Road?).
We're looking to splurge a little and stay somewhere nice over Christmas itself, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend places to spend Christmas Day around that part of Australia.
Any suggestions welcome - we'd probably like to be on the coast, with good food and drink easily available.
Thanks,
John.

There are some great places along the great ocean road, friendly and laid back, I'd look into this a bit more.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Sydney fireworks are a one off, but even the hostels inflate there price dramatically, so Melbourne is a definitely a cheaper option.
I stayed at sydney coogee beach on xmas day. I probably wouldn't do it again but abit football/rugby and a bbq was definitely something different.0 -
I was in Australia for Christmas a couple of years ago we hired a cottage near Wilsons Prom and then spent a couple of days at a winery for new year - quite a few have hotels/spas on site. The Mornington Peninsula just outside of Melbourne is also really nice.......0
