I can see why some garages won't want to fit anything but a new part if failure or removal could leave you without a working engine.0

I'm currently searching for reconditioned parts myself - ones with a warranty.
I wonder why the garage didn't mention that option.
Just got the first one for £180 with 1 months warranty.
Will wait and see what comes in.
Update: The garage have found a second hand one for £100, so let's hope it's gonna work:-)0 -
I'm not suggesting that any of the replies have been anything but helpful but if I were in your position I would join one of the Subaru Forums and ask your question there, after carrying out a Forum search, you will almost certainly find that other members have experienced a similar problem.0

I have a Subaru Legacy & main dealer parts prices are eye watering! There are always a few Legacys on Ebay breaking for parts, this us the route I would go down. I've always managed to avoid main dealer prices.0

Yep. I refuse to believe that the air con unit would be specific to the 3.0 model, as they were relatively small sales. id' find out what cars share that part and get one from a breaker.
Incidentally, other than that is it ok? I'm strongly considering getting one, the 3.0 Spec B manual in a few months. Contenders are a 2.5 XT Forester.0 -
The car itself is lovely to drive. It's a great combination of comfort, handlng and power.
The downsides are the poor fuel consumption (I got about 22mpg on the motoway at the weekend although we were fully loaded), the expense of parts and the difficulties getting parts and sometimes the "I'll have to take the engine out to get to that".
Sounds like you probably know all that already.Oh yeah if you're used to it will be a pain without
I have an R reg Corsa without air con and the fan is brilliant. I have no issue at all without having air con in that car. It gets warm very quick and also produces cold well as well and the air gets around if you open the windows.
However on the Subaru it's somehow a real PITA.
Opening the windows is noisy, turbulent and the air doesn't flow to the places you need. IMO it appears to be designed to work with aircon and really doesn't work very well without.0 -
Try one of the subaru owners forums. Ac delete a common performance mod I bet someone out there done it before on your engine and can advise.0

(Haven't got anything to contribute here, as some of the guys better at mechanics than me have already replied; just thanked a few. This is what makes this forum great. Well done).0

Just a thought, but have you changed the cabin filter in the Subaru?I have an R reg Corsa without air con and the fan is brilliant. I have no issue at all without having air con in that car. It gets warm very quick and also produces cold well as well and the air gets around if you open the windows.

I've done that on an Impreza, it was just behind the glovebox and easy to access since the car is designed RHD. If they're not changed they get clogged up and really kill the power of the fan. Often ignored in servicing, and can transform an older cars air con/heater system. For the £20 it's well worth doing.0
