Moving to the UK - credit check needed for rent

Dear All,

I am moving to the UK and want to rent an apartment. The letting agent told me that they can't help because I have no credit history in the UK. Is there any solution to this? I mean I have credit cards and enough cash to pay the rent even for years in advance.

I can't believe that there are no solution for this.

You could try landlords where they require 6 months rent upfront.

A lot depends on WHY you are wanting to rent in the UK.

if you are coming to take up a permanent job, then you are a decent bet but need to talk to landlords not agents. They know they can chase you for unpaid rent etc.

If you are doing a three year course, you probably have as much chance as a UK student.

What LLs worry about is that you move in, even pay 6 months rent, fail to move out, leave the place eventually in a mess and go back overseas where they cannot pursue you for debts.

A good work history and evidence of being a good tenant previously will help.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Thank you, I am moving there for work, I have a contract already. I can also provide UK guarantors, pay as much deposit they need and 6 month rent up front if necessary.

Why is everyone obsessed with using agents who will charge you loads of money in fees so they can decide if you can rent? There are plenty of Landlords who rent directly and a lot who don't credit check, that has always been my experience anyway.

just look in your local paper

If you are coming from abroad, the Chittagong Daily Herald may not have much for you in terms of a nice three bed semi in Barnstaple! Although yes, negotiating direct with a LL can be more flexible.

OP, there are a couple of normal solutions to this. One is 6 months rent up front. The other is providing a UK based guarantor with acceptable credit.
