Selling a high-value car

I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice please. As part of my late father's Probate I am having to sell his car. I have run the registration through We Buy Any Car and it came up with £37,000.

Now having bought my last car for £4,000 in £20 notes from Ebay I am completely and utterly stumped as to where to go and what to do!

I am quite capable of drawing up an Auto Trader ad - but how on earth do you go about securing payment for that amount of money? It's not something I can afford to mess up as it's all part of the legal process and the courts will want proof of sale.

Is it one of those occasions where you just have to go through an official middle man and suck up the fees?

Thank you

  • Sorry to hear the reason for the sale. I'm commenting though as my last car was £4000 too. It was a private sale local to me, the lass selling came round to my house, I did a bank transfer online and she checked it had been received by an app on her mobile phone, which it was, immediately. I then gave her a lift home, sorted.

    Maybe something on those lines?

What about approaching dealers who sell similar cars and ask them to bid you on it.

I'd an X5 some years back and a main dealer bought it for £43,000 for stock.

Ring round a few and ask to speak to "the used car buyer".

If you go down the autotrader route, then probably bank transfer is safest. Prepare for time wasters and scammers though - generally if it sounds dodgy, it is dodgy - "i am a minister in nigeria and i am buying this for my son" or "i am an oil rig worker". generally if they're not coming to see it but want to transfer funds its a scam.
  • When I bought a car from a private seller for £27,000 I paid with a bank draft.

A degree of caution is needed with those to ensure the draft is genuine before accepting it.

  • If you want to sell it privately to get the best return. Have the buyer pay you at your bank.
If it's cash, the bank can check it. A bankers draft or whatever they are today, you bank can check its not stolen or forged.
When you're happy hand over the keys.

How far away are WBAC on price? Sometimes they can be "ok" on price if you have a car they want.

What is the car? What year?

£37000 would be too high for most daily (personal) instant bank transfer limits wouldn't it? It would likely end up taking 3 days for the funds to clear.

Not if the buyer did it by prior arrangement with their bank.

On the basis the value of a house can be transferred via CHAPS instantly then £37,000 certainly can be.

As to Fast Payment, the limit varies by bank, some go up to £100,000 daily limit.
  • Thank you so much for all the replies and suggestions. The car is a 61 plate Range Rover Vogue SE.

To be honest, it's going to be one of the hardest things I've ever done, so the less trouble and hassle the better.

I will try our local Land Rover garage and just see what (if anything) they can offer and then compare it to WBAC and see. I'm still waiting for Probate so I have time on my side.

    Thank you again x

Webuyanycar's figure looks as if it is in the right ballpark.
