The hotel was probably threatened with being delisted by hotels.com and expedia - that's going to cost them more than the difference in a room rate!

How do you suggest they do this? By doing so they'd have to cancel someone elses booking so what makes yours more important? I know you have your theory that they've cancelled to make more money but you have to take them on their word, you've no way to prove this.

I've always found the customer service of hotels.com to be spot on, they've given me loads in the past. I'd suggest talking to them and seeing if they can work something out for you.

I was a gold member with them so this may have held some influence but it's always worth asking.

The travel industry doesnt always work like that.

Sometimes hotels/airlines will only make so many rooms/seats available to a supplier, or that supplier will block purchase rooms/seats at a discounted rate and then sell them off (often cheaper than the airline/hotel will charge themselves).

It is more commonplace in airfares but it does still happen with hotels.

OP's obviously had their issue dealt with, I was just posting some info on why rooms might still be available but the hotel or travel agent may not have any showing as available.

And well done on your good result OP.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
