Possible Age Discrimation?

Interesting one..
I'm 20 and Recently went into one of the 'Discount' Supermarkets and decided to buy a bottle of Limoncello for a dinner party I was attending that night.
Long story short; the Checkout girl refused to sell me the Alcohol because freind did not have any ID on him despite that fact that I was paying (He wasn't buying anything hence no wallet). The store has since confirmed to me that if I was older.... say 40-odd they would have sold it.
My question is this; Is a store allowed to discriminate in this way?

Yes of course they are. Legally they're not allowed to sell to anyone below the age of 18 so if there is even slight suspicion that the person might be under 18 they have to ID. No ID no sale. If someone is 40 they're clearly not under 18 so there would be no need to ask for ID.0

Yes.
Indeed the store in question might face legal sanctions if it failed to act in that way.0 -
Myself and OH both had to show ID recently, they didn't doubt that he was old enough (he's 43) but weren't sure about me so without me also proving my age he couldn't buy any alcohol.
Luckily we both had ID on us so got served no problem but they would have refused if I didn't have mine.0 -
