How is VED refund paid?

Just wondering if anyone knows how the refund is paid?

Is it paid straight back to the card you paid with or do they send a cheque?

I move in the next week so wondering if I need to update the V5 first before getting rid of my old car.

Just out of interest. If you sold a vehicle before the 1st of october and it had 9 months tax on it would they automatically refund the new owner or even the seller if they hadn't registered it yet?

The new owner is never refunded VED.
If DVLA had not been notified of the change of keeper they cannot do a VED refund as they are neither psychic nor clairvoyant.

Selling my car next week, my understanding is the refund is processed automatically when you send your V5 off. Not sure how it's paid but sounds like you'll receive a cheque as HBS says above.
