Best solution for slatted wooden bed with new mattress

We have a pine bed frame with rigid wooden slats. I have a new mattress coming and have been told that slats shorten the life of a mattress. As we can't yet afford a base is this true of wooden slats or just a myth ? If it is true, what is the best compromise for this ?

Thanks

  • What Type of mattress? Pocket Springs, Memory Foam, ?????

I was told this by a guy we bought a mattress from (an old guy in the business since dinosaurs roamed the earth) said the problem isn't the slats as such, more the number of them... he said you find most beds have a good 2"+ gap between the slats, that is too much for most mattresses (Obviously they do this as more slats would cost more money) He advises buying some extra lengths of planed wood, same size as the existing slats and cut additional slat and add to the base so the gap between slats is only about 1" Max..... Has served me pretty well and NO issues with the mattress...
  • Here's a useful article about slatted beds (fab website and fab mattresses too!):

We have an old duvet under our mattress, to try and cushion the impact from the slats and protect the mattress.
