Could try googling company number and word director and his name to see if you can throw up any links to any other company he may have.

OP I think you can assume that something has happened either gone out of business, family issues or illness (or worse).

Decide how long before you are going to need/want a new door and then follow the advice above (letter/email). If local why not pop round to his premises and make enquiries with neighbours etc?

Exactly, that has to be one of the big advantages of choosing to use a local company. If it's really a one man band then the "one man" may be ill, gone out of business, or even (worst case) dead.
