Am I entitled to money from a house sale???

Evening everyone.
I would like to ask some advice on behalf of my mother in law.
Her and her partner have lived together for 15years. The house is in her partners name as are all the bills etc.
She always pays half towards the bills and food etc and she would like to know if she would be entitled to a percentage of the house at any point in the future?
He does not have a will as he keeps putting off making one even though he is 70.
Thank you for any advice

When you say bills...what does that include? I gather they aren't married.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Sorry no they are not married. Just lived together for 15years.
She pays towards food, electric and gas
  • She always pays half towards the bills and food etc

    And what about the mortgage?

But really, if her name isn't on the mortgage/deeds then she is basically just paying rent.

He should have a will in place.
  • Yes i fully agree he should have a Will in place. When my nanna died last year her house etc went into probate and it took around three months to sort everything out.
The mortgage is in his name and is now fully paid off

Since they are unmarried, there is no automatic right of inheritance. But she could make a claim against the estate as a financial dependant.

    He should make one.
  • Thank you for all your help, I will tell her tomorrow when I see her.
    Many thanks

Since he doesn't have a will, it's all down to the rules of intestacy - and they have her slightly below the Queen. The five kids are first in line.

She'll be in a weak position if he dies intestate......

Is she sure that he intends to provide for her in any will?
