SLS-free toothpaste

I'm looking for toothpaste that doesn't contain SLS. Does anyone have any recommendations as I'm finding some eye watering prices online!

Thanks.

The cheapest Sls free toothpastes are probably lidls dentalux or Aldi dentitex toothpastes. Many of the sensodyne formulations are Sls free but you need to check as some do have sls in.

That's great, thanks. Lidl and Aldi are my two favourite supermarkets so will pick some up today!

Of the mainstream brands - Sensodyne ProNamel is often the one I recommend.

    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Can I ask why sls free?

I avoid SLS in shampoo and skincare as consistently every experience I've had with products containing it and ones that don't, suggest to me that it's very bad for my skin and scalp. It's never obviously affected me in toothpaste however. Perhaps I've missed something?

One brand I buy sometimes, called ultradex, doesn't contain it. It's a moderate price toothpaste you can find in places like Boots.

Often people with conditions such as recurrent aphthous ulcers find that certain ingredients in toothpaste can make the condition worse.

Common ingredients that can be a problem are SLS , cinnamon , benzoic acid as well as some others.

There are also many scare stories on the internet about SLS.

These are almost certainly untrue, but some do over-react to them. As Brook said though, an increase in oral ulceration in sensitive people is a known and documented side-effect.

I suffer from mouth ulcers so thought trying SLS-free toothpaste was worth a go. I know a link has not been proved but for the price of a few tubes of toothpaste it can't do any harm.

Have you seen/told your dentist about them. Has your dentist seen them?

Off the top of my head I can think of thirty different causes for mouth ulcers , all of which should be investigated by an oral medicine specialist ie a dentist.

SLS is a known cause of oral ulceration. The problem is - it's not the only cause!

So it might help - but it might not! As you say though, it's worth a go.

I don't get ulcers all the time but I've noticed I get more ulcers when using certain brands of toothpaste so want to try a completely SLS-free brand to see if that clears up the problem. If not, I'll see a doctor/dentist.

    Thanks all.
