Advice Please :)

Hi

I am starting to sell furniture on eBay. The furniture is all large items so I have listed as collection only. I understand that some sellers have had problems with people collecting items and then marking as not received.

Would it be acceptable for me to provide some sort of receipt that I ask the buyer to sign? I understand that they could just use a fake signature but if they are a scammer they might be put off?

What do other people do to avoid the scammers on collection only items?

Comments

  • Don't allow any reversible payment method such as PayPal. Only accept cash on collection.
Do not allow anyone to arrange a courier to collect the item as it leaves you wide open to being scammed.

You need to accept Paypal to list. You can add a postage option and have collection as an option. You could, offer 'postage' via a private courier that would be £100, or whatever. If they then choose to collect you can ask for cash on collection (although technically you can't insist on it). If a buyer collects and insists on paying by Paypal then it's more than likely they are chancing a scam. You could offer credit/debit card on collection using some of the payment managing systems, check how the Paypal one works (it costs £49 at the moment).

A signature on collection is pointless really, it may work in court if someone does scam you but wouldn't work with Paypal. There are other options too (CCTV of collection, pictures, etc) but none of those cover for Paypal either.

I think the only solution is to say that if you pay by paypal, it must be posted, and set the postage at a price no one will pay.
