Reusing underlay.

Carpet in lounge, stairs and landing and main bedroom are being replace due to a flood. However since we have had to dismantle bed in spare bedroom to store stuff we have decided to replace the carpet in there and my sons bedroom. We won't need new underlay in spare room as it is not used much, however I am sure they will insist we have new underlay in sons room. In the lounge we have under the sofas underlay that is still ok, it has always had the sofas under them and no water from flood. There will be enough to use in my sons room. Do you think we can reuse it? Thanks

You will save about sixpence halfpenny.

    Its really not worth doing.

Plus a carpet fitter will charge you more to start chopping about old bits of underlay.

Have been quoted £100 for 12mm foam underlay 4m x 3m. Carpet is hessian backed! So recyclying the unused bits in lounge, nowhere neat the bit that was flooded much cheaper option. I Will remove it myself.

Reuse depends on the type. If it is rubber backed it will deteriorate over time, whether it is under sofas or not. When you take it up it may fall apart.

There are other types, foam and recycled wool felt which you may be able to reuse.

Your quote of £8 sq m is OTT. We paid about £3 for heavy duty wool felt.

Cloud 9 is about £60 delivered for 15 sqm on ebay. Shop around.
  • If you can always put new underlay under a new carpet. You will notice the difference. As has been mentioned, if price is an issue, shop around, you will be surprised what you can get.

What you are planning is doable, BUT, the issue is no one will provide a warranty if you don't buy their product.

Your underlay may last the millennium out, but if the carpet fails, they will blame the underlay:A:A:A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
