I just found a shallow depression dug in my pathway, with a clean bone lying in it.

It doesn't look as though it's been buried, it's very clean. I can't work out whether something was trying to bury it or dig it up and whether it might have been a rat, fox or maybe a dog.

And I've no idea what the bone is; it's a little over an inch and a half, say 40mm in length.

No idea Im afraid but could easily be a fox or if you have some dogs that roam in the area, foxes do love rabbits and stuff! Intriguing though!

Not a rabbit bone - they are thinner for that length. Short and fat I would expect to come from the foot of a larger animal.

There have been rats around, also foxes; but it's uncommon to see a dog in my garden.

No apparent teeth marks, but it's as clean as a whistle. Ah well, guess I'll never know. But I'll give the neighbour's house a wide birth at night, just to be on the safe side.

31st of October all the !!!!!s and ghosts come back for a big party with fireworks and kids begging with menaces maybe it's trying to find the rest of its body before the big day? I wouldn't interfere with the bone at all.
