Would you repaint?

So we are leaving our rented property in January next year.

I have been here five years. The bathroom was newly painted when we moved in, but unfortunately my LL did not use bathroom/kitchen paint and so where I have washed the walls down over the years this paint has come away showing the old blue paint underneath.

Would you repaint the bathroom to be white like it was when I moved in, or leave it? It's not really my fault that the paint has come off I don't think.

    Hung up my suit!
I would try to leave a place as I found it. Repainting would be a nice goodwill gesture IMO.
  • I would leave it. 5 years is a long time and the chances are the LL will want to give the whole house a freshen up anyway, plus if he didn't use the right paint in the first place I don't see why you should pay to put it right.
  • How much goodwill (or agro avoided) would two hours work with a roller and a tin of cheap white paint get you?

    I would paint it.
  • Why don't you discuss this with your LL?

I haven't handed in my notice yet so can't really discuss it!

I would to be honest. Use the same cheap white paint they used originally. Just make sure you don't spill it and cause stains anywhere else :)
It might make the landlord more likely to forgive any other issues there are that were your fault. For the sake of avoiding hassle I would probably do it.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Think about the next tenant - do you want to pass the problem onto them? If you repaint it with some cheap emulsion that's what you'll be doing.

Don't repaint it (it's fair wear and tear given the wrong paint was used), point it out to the landlord in the hope that they'll repaint it with a suitable paint.
  • When I rented part I the agreement was the upkeep of interior decor so I would especially if you are going to be there a while yet anyhow

See on my agreement you can't redecorate without prior permission. And although I wouldn't be changing the colour if they decided they didn't like my paint job or wanted to be awkward they could argue that was a breach.
