Windows 8.1

Bit late to this thread but... I've had very good success upgrading Vista-based computers to Windows8/8.1Pro. All the machines I've upgraded from Vista have been powerful enough to take 8. If interested just make sure you run the Win8upgrade adivsor. Main issue is the time it takes to go to 8, then add updates then 8.1 and its updates (Note: there may be a quick way to go straight to 8.1).Firetastic wrote: »What do people think of Windows 8.1? If you're a "Windows traditionalist" then 8 is an excellent base OS in my opinion provided you know how to avoid Metro/Modern interface. The main issue I've seen with 8 is people who use the Windows Mail App which is, by a very big margin, Microsoft's most horrible bit of software they've ever produced. Avoid at all costs.0 -

I couldn't get on with Win8+1, so I followed some simple steps to make it look and operate like Win.7.
Now I have the start button back so don't have to use the 'charms', which I found very annoying.
Very happy now I have got it sorted.:DYou live..You learn.:)0 -
Got win 8.1 but really getting annoyed by the weekly updates failing, no problems until I had the blue screen after installing incorrect update. Windows help took control of my system and reloaded windows but now all updates fail. Roll on new operating system.0

I recently built a decent spec PC; it's running Ubuntu Linux.0

Windows Server 2012 seems to have the same interface as Windows 8. Takes 4 clicks to achieve what took 1 in Windows 2008 Server or Windows 7. Laughable that on a server I'm expected to use a touch interface.0

It also has the weird mish-mash of interface style, plus some; some things are buttons, some are cleverly disguised hyperlinks, and some things they just couldn't be bothered with so you have to use PowerShell.Windows Server 2012 seems to have the same interface as Windows 8. Another tip is to disable some of the 'live tiles' from the start page as they can slow loading down and use up a lot of resources.
Right click on the tile from the drop down list, choose 'unpin' or turn live tile off'.
Hope this helps.:)You live..You learn.:)0
