BBC Iplayer downloader hammering CPU?

Not sure why this is happening or is a known issue, I have BBC Iplayer latest download manager installed, and downloading a couple of programs - note, downloading, not playing. And yet it was taking about 5-10 seconds to switch back to the Iplayer window (using Windows 8.1) to check on progress, so I checked CPU and its hovering around and over 50-60% of total processor usage to DOWNLOAD a file.

I can understand why some programs would use a lot of CPU, but this isn't cutting video, or crunching some huge task, it's downloading a file.

I don't have any problem with any other programs. With BBC Iplayer downloading my CPU across 4 cores shoots up to 100% and other programs are affected, simply pause Iplayer downloads and things go back to normal.

Of course playing a show while downloading another is impossible because just downloading seems to require most of 4 cores running at 2Ghz...
