Amazon wish lists are becoming ever more popular and I'm thinking of using wish lists for people I send gifts to (but not my nearest and dearest). Do you prefer a surprise or something off a wish list?
I'm doing most of my Christmas shopping on amazon this year and feel rather guilty-sorry British economy, sorry struggling businesses as it's so easy and quick. Trying to decide between a surprise or ordering something from people's lists

Both- while I love surprises (well, most of the time!) the items I put on my Amazon list tend to be very specific things I'd really like that I guess maybe wouldn't occur to most people to get for me.
And I agree, while I feel a bit guilty it is so much easier shopping for long distance folk... I tend to buy close family more personal gifts, but if they have a wishlist it can really help for inspiration!Living thriftilymost of the time

Definitely Amazon wish list - that way people get what they will use.
As hard as you try, sometimes the surprise item can be so far off of what a person's taste is that the item may get consigned to the back of the cupboard or be donated to the charity shop, which is effectively a waste of your money.
I would far rather spend my hard earned money on something someone is definitely going to use.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...

Every year I aks my kids for a list & I rarely get them anything from it , although DD said I never get it wrong anyway. Last year she was surprised because I got her 2 things on the listproud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

I would say both, I have found the wishlists can guide you onto great present finding paths if you find a common link! Also as others say you know they definately want it!

wishlists - I always forget what I put on them anyway as I do them through the year:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

I like both as well! I'd rather use someone's wishlist if I'm not exactly sure if they'd like my 'surprise' idea as that's better than wasting money on something they may see as tat. And the same when receiving gifts, if someone is struggling for ideas then the wishlist is ideal
but I like to try and put thought into giving presents to my nearest and dearest and then if I get stuck I ask for ideas

Wishlist.. I hate feeling bad about getting presents I don't like, I'd much rather have a list and get stuff I want or need.
I don't like surprises anyway.. they interfere with my routines and make me panic.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Almost. Although the list is not necessarily for others to view and pick things off of to buy you. You can add items to the list that you see whilst you are browing items on Amazon and add them to your wishlist by using the "add to wishlist" button on the right hand side of the screen.
I use the wishlist when I am keeping an eye on prices for items for myself, for a possible pressie for my DS or for other friends and family. I also add items I would like myself, but may not have the funds to get now.
I make a separate list with things that I would like to receive as gifts, but am unlikely to buy myself as I consider them a "would like to have" or luxury type item rather than a necessity, and if anyone gets stuck for ideas and asks me for some, I may direct them to the list if I don't have something else in mind that is not sold by Amazon or that I know is cheaper elsewhere.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
