Is Poundland's 1-week guarantee legal?

I took a faulty pair of earphones back to Poundland, and their cashier told me goods cannot be exchanged after a week from purchase. I made the purchase last month but have been too ill to take it back until today.

My limited understanding of consumer law suggests it is illegal for a shop to refuse to exchange a faulty product just because the purchase was made over a week ago. Am I correct?

The cashier exchanged the earphones anyway, but the replacement has the same fault (one channel is dead), so I'd like to be able to cite legislation at the manager if they refuse to exchange them.

They were a pound. Move on. Try spending a bit more on the next ones. Lesson learned.

Two pairs? Single channel dead? Using them on a phone? Do you have a case on the phone not allowing the jack to fit into the socket properly?

Send me a SAE and cheque to the charity of your choice for £10 and I will send you a brand new pair of apple earphones.

Poundland can give a one second guarantee if they want and it is perfectly legal, but that is not what you are talking about

The legislation you want to cite is the Sale of Goods Act, although I'm inclined to agree with some other posters that headphones costing £1 are unlikely to be much good anyway - having one channel working sounds like about £1's worth of audio.
  • You have already spent too much time on a £1 product. Suck it up and chalk it down to experience. Don't buy carp in future and expect it to be any good.

I wouldn't bother to return them personally but if you want to their FAQ's state:
    Q. The product I purchased is faulty, what can I do?

    A. Please take the product with your valid till receipt or other proof of purchase to your nearest Poundland store, for the attention of the Store Manager who will be able to assist your further.

Why not put one speaker from each working pair into each of your ears and voila - stereo ;)

Don't be silly, they both need to be plugged in. How do you plug 2 sets of earphones into one device ?
