Opening a "BLACK" link

How do you open/view a link from the desktop / menu that opens as a black panel - with no menu or any way of viewing its contents ?
I mean - I have a problem opening Firefox - when I click on it, it opens as a black panel with no options ?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program with no change...

Thanks - but just discovered that it is a known error and Mozilla are aware and are working on it
