New boiler .....very confused

Hi wonder if you can help me out with my boiler replacement decision.

Current system is an Apollo 40 Si with a hot water cylinder. At around 24 years old it is now a bit hit and miss so looking to replace. Also need to replace around 6 radiators.

3 bedroomed house fairly large rooms, 2 pumped showers recently fitted but mostly just one person living here. Important to me is savings as I am away a lot so no need for constant water/heat, good powerful hot showers and reliability.

So far I have had 2 quotes one from British Gas which I am assuming is not good for £2600 just for the boiler and they are recommending a Worcester Greenstar 15 RI. Rads would be separate cost

A local plumber who fitted my new bathrooms and showers has quoted £3200 for a Worcester Greenstar 34cdi combi with the rads included

Confusion has now come with another plumber friend of mine (who is not going to be doing the job) saying that a combi is not right for me due to my love of powerful showers (true) and a number of other issues which for him means he would never fit a combi. He is suggesting either a conventional boiler or a system boiler and keeping the tank.

So I guess I would appreciate some objective advice on here before I make a decision.

    If you want to save money long term then it would be a combi for me but as your friend says the shower will not be as powerful as it is now. You could get a system boiler and get remote heating installed so you can turn HW/CH on and off when you'd need it from your phone
  • you can't use your new shower pumps with a combi, if you are happy with your hot water atm then just change the boiler so either a system boiler or open vented (which you have atm)

    Also quote was 1850 so I may not be saving on the combi but I am on the installation
  • If you have a good cold main pressure a shower on a combi won't be too bad

    I know you want to keep your existing shower but the pressure on our shower from a combi is amazing. In fact we were considering a pump before we changed the boiler.
