How Much Noise Is Too Much Noise?

I have lived in my home for over 6 months however about 5 weeks ago my neighbor moved in some women. Since then we have had to listen to there bass of there music at all hours of the day every other day. I have a son who is 2 and a partner who works nights, both who are unable to sleep due to the noise. The music normally goes off at 10.30-11pm but that doesn't help the fact that my son who normally goes to bed at 7pm can not sleep nor can my partner sleep in the day. I have been round there 8 times now to complain about the noise and every time I am told there "sorry" but then a hour later the music goes back on meaning all we can hear is "boom boom boom" for hours! Last time I was spoken to rudely, I was told that basically they could barely hear it in there home and told me to basically get on with things and at this rate they will not be able to play music in there home. I am at my wits end! I can hear the music in every single room of my home and its making me on edge not to mention the effect its having on us all with sleep. I live in a terraced house so I get that I will hear some noise but this is ridiculous. I have tried to even sound it out with the Tv, personal music on my laptop however this is ineffective as I can hear there music over it. I have another year in my home as it is rented and I really do not want to have to move! They own there home.... What should I do?

Invite them around so they can hear what you are experiencing?0

hard one as rules for noise in this country are crap...depending if you live in an area where they have a good noise team, try ringing your environmental health, see if they are any help.
You could first try talking to the reasonable one, if there is one, in the house concerned and asking them to come listen to the noise, to hear the problem, then come up with some suggestion on times they could have the music turned off or down, so maybe level 8 on the music player after 7pm. Check in your house what level is acceptable.
Sounds to me it's the base that is the problem, depending where they have their music player or sub woofer placed in the house will greatly affect what you hear, they could hear very little base but further away the base sound could be a lot higher, hence the boom boom sounds you hear.
Just moving the music player/sub woofer in their house to a different location could give them the same quality of sound but at a lower volume, so they hear the same but you don't get the boom boom, as said tho this is all dependent there is a reasonable one in the house to talk to...if not see if your police are any help if the environmental health are not.
About time we had some standard sound laws throughout the country.0 -
We had an issue with this years ago in a shared house and it was because we had the sub woofer against the wall. We moved it 1 cm and the problem was solved.
The woman was shouting at us staying it's been awful for the last 2 weeks, to which we pointed out it was the first time she had said anything with us and we had it fixed in a jiffy.0 -

Most people don't like confrontation with those who don't give a **** about others and make too much noise. This usually builds up in to an explosive outburst when it gets too much, as you found out.
I agree with Sniggings, we need to sort out noise issues and punish the selfish.Pants0 -
If it were me in your position then I would attempt to resolve it between the neighbours and myself first, but if that doesn't work for you then you need to get the council on it so the noise level that you hear in YOUR flat is measured.
If the council says it's too loud, they'll do the work for you.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0 -
The problem is I have been round there 7 times so they know it is loud. If I put my TV up to around 34 I could just about drown it out but I can not do that every time as I have a 2 year old trying to sleep as well as other neighbors on the other side of me. From what I know about the speaker, they moved it from the wall of my kitchen to what seems there lounge.... which is attached to my lounge... we can hear it worst upstairs however
.
I rang the police tonight and they said they can not do a thing about it although you can hear the noise on the street and out the back. They told me to contact environmental health but they are not open to Monday so that is no help to me at all.
In a space of 3 weeks I have had to listen to there music on 12 occasions, 4 hours a time if not more and more than once in the day!
I feel none of them are reasonable to approach as I have approached both of them, last time it was her that jumped down my neck and had the audacity to invite me in her home to listen to her music - I could hear it was loud from the front door and have been in her house before to tell her the base was WAY to loud. She also said she was sick of my moaning and she also said soon she will not be able to listen to her music, like it was my fault?
It has got to the point where I actually want to go round there and scream and shout at them but I will not lower myself to that....0 -
Then report it to the council and they will install (very accurate) monitoring equipment in your property and record everything over a time period.
The audio will be analysed at the end (on the dB scale), and if it's OTT then the council will sort them.
PS
All depends on your TV, but volume number 34 isn't that loud on a lot of them to be honest.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

yea I could understand why she didn't want to come round as we were 4 youngish men and she was quite old.
We gave her the house phone number and out mobiles so she could text or call if there was a problem.0 -
I understand that some people like to listen to music up loud.
I think these people, if living in a terrace, or apartment etc. should treat themselves to Bose wireless headphones. They are fab!
Years ago, my elderly neighbour had the TV so loud I nearly got an attack of the vapours! However we were very friendly, and I asked her why the TV was blaring all day and night, she said she couldn't hear it at all unless it was blasting out.
I brought her in to my house and let her try my Bose headphones. She bought a set the next day. Loves them. Sorted.0
