Barclaycard fraud

Hi all

I've just had my first (and hopefully last) experience of credit card fraud. Found my online access was suspended and called barclaycard to be told that there had been several 'test purchases' in the last couple of days as well as 2 mobile phone topups on 12 Oct. Only £90 taken which I now have to dispute, but I'm surprised at how offended I feel!

I'm looking to do everything I can to avoid this happening again. Just looking for some thoughts as to the most likely cause. I got the card in March and used it for 2 balance transfers. Since then, I've made a few purchases but don't use it often. The fraudulent payments were taken on 12 Oct and my only activity around then was a US ESTA payment on 1 Oct, a US rental car payment on 1 Oct and a few supermarket payments (self service tills) the last few days in September.

The online payments were made from my office computer which has high security so I doubt it is a computer virus. It could potentially be a hack at the rental car company.

Should I notify them that there is a potential issue? And is it likely that it may have arisen due to transactions even earlier than 1 Oct? (I would've thought that if someone obtained my details, they would try to use it asap?).

Anything you guys would do?

Thanks

I'd do nothing. There's a thousand ways your card details could have ben obtained.

Let the card company play detective. They will have much more information at their disposal than you.
  • As stated if you've only used the card in those locations I'd leave it to the bank to investigate.

My only experience of card fraud turned out to be an internal matter within the bank so as long as you've been as carefull as you could be thats all you can do.

At least they spotted the issue before more money was involved.
