Does anyone know if you have to pay for an architect to come over and have an initial discussion about what you could possibly do to your home - not detailed designs, but more "you could possibly knock that wall down and open up that space" etc etc.

At the moment, I just want to know what the possibilities are and roughly how much it would cost to do it - I don't want to commit to anything.

I've never dealt with architects before, so just interested how it usually works. Clearly many architects will have different ideas and I don't want to pay 4 or 5 architects just to look and tell me their ideas - as 90% of that will be a waste.

The 2 i spoke to (one an architect, the other a technician) came over for free.

I would just give a few a ring (or look at websites) - they usually specify a free consultation.

If they live locally then I would expect them to come out for free for an initial discussion and to give you an idea of what their costs would be for their work.

Try giving some a call, talking through briefly on the phone what you want and saying can you come and have a look to see what is here is currently and to give a quote for your work. If they say no try the next one.
