Scottish Power Overcharge?

My Mum is a bit stuck. She is a customer with Scottish Power. She has had a bill from them saying she owe's over £500. She has contacted Energy Watch and have managed to reduce her bill down to £85 a month. She lives alone in a two up two down bungalow. This surely can not be right. She has been signed off work since March and is not well what so ever. She has very little income coming in. Is there any way she can access a fund because she is really struggling. Where she works has sent her a letter saying that they are considering terminating her employment and will not pay her any more sick pay. I am really worried about her.

The first thing is to establish if she owes that money or not. Over what period has that £500 bill been incurred? How does she usually pay for her gas? Do you know how much gas she has used? Have you checked the meter readings? What sort of gas-powered equipment does she have?0

good advice above,
id also try and find out if she was on some sort of budget plan where she paid, for example, £20 per month regardless of usage.
it may be that she was in fact using £40 worth and this is how the debt couldve accumilated?0
