    Yes start date of 26th February, end date 26th August. Sorry one day out....

    Period of 6 months

    This is really getting tiresome!

    * 26th Feb to 26th Aug
    OR
    * 26th Feb for 6 months

    It cannot be both. As already explained, 26th Feb - 26th Aug is 6 months + 1 day (NOT 6 months)

    First tenant left during August, he gave notice. The exact date doesn't matter as he paid the full month, so in the LA eyes he left on 25th August.
    The exact date might matter.

    1) as this is a joint and several tenancy "he" did not pay the full month, you all jointly paid it. Your rent is not divided into his and yours
    2) As already explained, his notice is irrelevant unless he left after the fixed term ended. Hence the importance of the exact dates of the tenancy. His date of departure is also irrelevant unless it was after the tenancy ended.

    So, for example if the tenancy was 6 months from 26th Feb, then it ended on 25th Aug, and if he left on 26th Feb this could be significant.

    (as previously stated '.....blood..... stone.....')

    GM - it's clear that the OP doesn't understand the significance of precise dates and I think you are being overly harsh( although we do obviously all appreciate your insight).
    OP- you can either leave and hope for the best of you can try and get to the bottom of all of this. My worry is that if you leave and things aren't done properly if you are named on a joint tenancy agreement and the rent doesn't get paid then you could in theory be taken to court (despite the fact you don't live there). I think you really need to see what tenancy is in effect (or what the letting agents think is in effect) and make sure a deed of variation is signed (if you accept you are in a contract and the landlord agrees to release you early).
