are these double glazzing fitters doing right?

Hello everyone.
We are having windows fitted by anglian installer. Unfortunately, it seems a few problems have arisen. Are these problems worthy of suspending payment.

1.
The first is a large gap between the brick and window frame on one window. From the top to the bottom on one side there is minimum gap of nearly 8mm to over 15 mm at its widest, and the screws are plainly evident.
Also, the window cill is cut longer than the frame, probably meaning the window should have been larger... Is this gap size normal or acceptable?

2.
The second is the amount of plaster removed from the side of the walls when removing the frame. Whilst that can happen, the fitter had no plaster with him so filled up the large gaps with a sealant, the same he put around the window edges when you finish. Then, having filled the gap with the sealant, the strip is placed over it. The rest of the gap, which is showing, will be filled with plaster. This was also done to another window in the house.

Is this excusable, or is it fair to ask the fitter (or should he) take out this strip and put plaster underneath it.

3
Also, none of the internal cills have been removed because they said the metal cills are attached to the house and would be too diffult /cause too much damage to remove. The frames are metal and have been in place for 40/years, so I guess this is understandable.

All thoughts welcome. Is this a a problem worthy of complaining to someone else about and
suspending final payment.

15mm is quite a big gap to have. I googled about this and another Anglian customer was complaining about the same thing. When I had mine done, I think the gap was hardly noticeable.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Sounds a bit rough to me. On some old houses/stonework you can't avoid having a large gap in a corner or side. But i certainly wouldn't fill with sealant?

Expanding foam then plastered/rendered over would of been a far better way of doing it.

How far are they from your property?

It's not your fault they didn't have any plaster! If i am on a job and i don't have something required i don't bodge it. I either go and get what is required then or i do as much as i can and return at a later date.

Customers are very understanding when i explain. I can do it this way now but that is rough OR i can come back another day at no extra charge because it's my fault i haven't got the bits!

    Good luck
  • God I HATE fitters (of every type) who after doing a job go and slap a load of silicon in the holes/gaps left...... just makes a good or reasonable done job look !!!!, cheap and nasty.... why do they do that ???? Bit of care and pride in your work goes a LONG way !!

Anglian fitters are sub contractors who are screwed down on price and have a financial incentive to cut as many corners as they can get away . This is something Anglian management are aware of - it has been accepted practice for years. The management happily accept this, for the alternative would be to pay the fitters more which would cut the commission going back to the sales people and management. All consumers should remember that Anglian staff are more concerned with their personal income than they are with windows being installed to a satisfactory standard.

Able and skilled sub contractors soon leave Anglian and go elsewhere.

Accepting that sealant is being used on OP windows I suggest OP carefully monitors what is being applied. Decorators caulk is cheaper than silicone - I am aware of Anglian fitters using caulk for external sealing. Of course the material is ruined by heavy rain, but by that time the fitters will have been paid and scarpered ...you try getting them back!
