Smartpayuk

My children attended a martial arts class over the last three years. I paid direct debit via "smartpay.uk" - my children no longer wanted to go so I told the class that we were finishing - I then cancelled my direct debit with the bank. Only to be contact by smartpay via text to contact them which I did. They explained that I had a THREE MONTHS cancellation fee to pay!!!! I was told that when I first signed up I signed a contract with smartpay (but I was not made aware of this fee - but did sign it!). This was at the beginning of July this year and I tried on serval occasions to speak to the martial arts school - left messages / text etc... But got not reply.
I heard nothing until today saying I owe £135 cancellation fee plus admin fees @ £15 - is there anything I can do to avoid paying this???
Any help or advice would be appreciated as I hate paying money for nothing!!
