eBay say I have to sign up to GSP, is it any good?

I've always been reluctant to sell international because I sell high value mobiles, and I've been put off by some if the stories I've heard. Anyway recirved an email from eBay saying I pretty much have to sign up for it. Although I can opt out later. Anyway is this any good? Should I go for it?

  • Apparently, they're a menace for damaging stuff, but if a buyer claims for damage in transit or non-delivery, as long as it made it to ebay's UK centre alright they'll foot the bill.

By the sounds of it I've got nothing to lose, just worried what happens if a buyer in Outer Mongolia or Nigeria wins the auction?

I'm going to opt out (assuming they'll tell me if I'm opted-in!). I always put on my listings UK Bidders only. I suspect it's just EBay wanting to make money out of the postage company they'll be using on the seller's behalf. What's effectively going to happen is, EBay will sting the buyer on the postage, the buyer will then have high expectations as to when the item will arrive, and if it doesn't the seller then gets it in the neck.

    AVOID!

Also, the dodgy posties will be having a field day with all these wonderful items arriving to an eBay depot, oh the possibilities!!!! I wonder what's inside?!?!!!???????

Opt out as soon as you can.

Selling anything electrical, or electronic, or region specific (such as DVDs) overseas will only come back to bite you in the derriere. If you'd chosen to sell in the UK only, why let ebay make the decision to change your mind for you? It'll open up a whole can of worms.

Are your items insured to go abroad? Is your packing good enough to get it to the buyer in, say, the outback of Australia in one piece? How will you deal with returns?

I sell overseas, including a lot of glassware. There's no way I'd let ebay or their appointed delivery service choose how my items will be delivered.
Exclamation and question marks - ONE exclamation mark or question mark is sufficient to exclaim or ask about something. More than one just makes you look/sound like a prat.

If you already have an international postage option, GSP won't be added to your listings. So I've added worldwide post at £500 to my listings that I don't want to send abroad.

I sell UK only and I've just been enrolled but will opt-out.

Even though you are protected from bad feedback and INR claims,
the small print says that SNAD disputes are left for you to sort out directly with the buyer, wherever they may be in the world.

I will opt out - my only experience so far is as a buyer, buying from the US. I've had two items not arrive and those that have took an age, arrived in poor condition and the cost was much more expensive than I would normally have paid.

Their/Pitney Bowes custom fee calculator seems to add the postage into the cost of the item AND the postage too which isn't right and means they are charging way over the odds.

I don't buy from sellers only offering the GSP service now so as a seller its not something I will use - I've only ever had one item go missing using standard parcel services internationally and with the 100s of items shipped I think that's pretty good.

As an occasional Ebay seller, I thought it was arrogant of Ebay to enrol everyone to their global selling scheme, and have opted out.

I only sell within the UK, and don't want the hassle of selling internationally.

It's easy enough to opt out.

    Go to My Ebay
    Account
    Site Preferences (left-hand side menu)
    Postage and Packaging services
Edit Global Shipping programme, click no
    and continue.

Why couldn't they have kept accounts as they were, and people could opt in if they wished?
