We are now getting the message "gfxui has stopped working"?0

You can do the msconfig thing at the same time. Windows update may up to an hour or more if you havent updated since you got the laptop.
To link a screenshot, you'll need to save it to your computer first. Then use a free hosting website like http://postimage.org/ to upload the picture to.
Once you have uploaded it, the website will give you a link to the picture which you can post here.0 -

Sounds like its knackered (corrupt drivers). Can you backup all your files in safe mode on to USB or DVD.
Then just restore it (or re-install windows). It'll probably save you days and days of messing around with it.
The model of the laptop should be on the base.0 -

I wouldn't recommend the following of that guide. Namely the utilisation of Driver Booster.0 -

At the back of the PC probably. You shouldn't have wasted time updating Windows at this stage.
Do you have somewhere wherein you can place your data? An external hard drive for instance.0 -
It's not defeat though.
The end result will be near perfect brand new laptop, better than any result we get from re-installing drivers, removing malware, defragmenting etc etc and it will take only an hour.
Thats why I always prefer that option with a heavily run down machine.
The only drawback is the need to back up files, and reinstall programs.
If its simply an internet/desktop laptop. Re-install all the way, that's what the function is there for.
Additionally I fear that some of the things we would need OP to do to attempt to fix it are going to be beyond them.
Anyway, Nifty has arrived to save the day so I shall leave it in his capable hands :T0 -

I'd just like to add to this.....I doubt this is the OPs issue but my own pc has been running slow recently and then I suddenly got problems with chrome tabs not opening.Turned out it's Trusteer Rapport ( a banking security program ) that was the cause. There is a fix available but I decided to uninstall Trusteer and now my pc ( and chrome ) is flying again0
