My first credit card - advice please. :)

Hi,

I'm looking to get my first credit card to pay off a £760 bill that has just landed on my doorstep.

I'd be hoping to pay off the £760 over the course of 12 months and obviously incur as little interest as possible - if any - to pay off in addition.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for me, please?

All feedback and help is appreciated!

Thank you.

Pay bill off, then burn the card.

Set up a standing order to pay the minimum so you never miss a payment then make additional payments upto £64 plus any interest added to clear within 12 months.

You'd be lucky if you got a £500+ credit limit as a first applicant with no previous history of managing credit cards. Providers normally start off small to reduce their risk of you defaulting. They also carry a hefty APR so you'll end up paying a boatload in interest.

If you held some cards and they were managed well the best option would have been to pay the bill off with a 0% purchase credit card and then pay it off before the promotional rate expires, resulting in zero interest.

Do you have an emergency fund or can the bill be split into monthly payments to make it more affordable?

What bill? Many (most?) bills can't be paid by a CC card unless it's a card that offers Money Transfers

For other options see Spending 0% Cards. You'll find a 'soft' eligibility checker in the article.

What credit history do you have and what income?

£760 bills don't just land on your doorstep unannounced. What is the bill for ? As a previous poster mentioned, you can't always use a CC to pay all bills - and even if you can, it's often not the best option. More details please, before we can offer any constructive advice.
