Travel Policy Cancelled Due to Claim

Hi all, we were due to travel on 13th October 2014. a week before my husband took me to A&E as I was feeling poorly. Following tests in hospital I was sent home having discounted cardiac problems with no follow up and got a fit to travel from my gp. On contacting Avanti, our travel insurance, to let them know what had gone on they checked with their under writers who said as medically it was unkown what was the cause of my feeling poorly they would not under write me to travel and I had to claim for cancellation of our trip. When I contacted Avanti after this to see what was required to get the policy re-instated I was told the policy was cancelled as I was making a claim against it and if I wanted travel insurance with them I would have to get a quote and take it from there. Considering this was a new annual policy that I paid £331 for I was a bit surprised and no body from Avanti had told me this before. Is this usual for a travel policy to be cancelled if a claim is made? Any help / advise gratefully received. thanks a lot

If the cause of an illness, presumed serious as it caused you to report to A&E, is unknown, then their underwriters may not be able to cover you. If that is the case (as that is what it seems) then they can cancel your cover.
They cannot insure for every eventuality in this case as you have been shown to have had a period of ill health with no known cause, so how can they insure that kind of risk?0 -
Thanks Dom, thank you for your reply. I was just surprised the policy was cancelled, I phoned the insurance company to ask what I needed to provide them with so that I may travel going forward and was told the plicy was cancelled - if you buy house insurance, car, pet, health and make claims the policies are not cancelled.0

From their point of view you have paid them £330 in premiums - your wife falls ill on holiday what do you think the costs will be?
As the cause of her illness is unknown I can see their point in not wanting to cover her.0
