Is theft covered by Section 75 please

Hi

I bought a new bike on Friday and it was stolen from our garage on Tuesday night before I had time to insure.

I paid with a John Lewis credit card, am I covered by section 75 please?

Many thanks

Natalie

No. Section 75 covers failure to deliver the purchased service or product.

Does your home insurance cover it?
  • OK thank you

    S75 isn't an insurance policy.
However, some cards do offer 'purchase protection': Credit Card Perks

S75 simply makes the card issuer jointly liable with the company you paid with the card to. So if you think the retailer is in some way responsible for the bike being stolen then yes. Presumably the shop isnt responsible for the bikes theft and so nor would your credit card company be.
  • Ok, thank you

Home insurance will usually cover single items up to a limit e.g. £500 though they often have a maximum as well (ours is £1500 I think so they won't cover my new bike)

Check your documentation to see what the limit is (DO NOT RING THEM - they will register it as a potential claim and chances are they will bump up your insurance regardless).

If it covers the bike, consider whether it is worth replacing on insurance as you will see higher premiums long term - if it's above the limit they do for single items then unfortunately you have to live with it

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
