SA Online Questions

Waiting for an activation code, but can anyone answer these questions in advance:

Will I have access to submit returns for older tax years (specifically 2011/2012)?

Will I be blocked from submitting a SA if the tax office did not require me to do so that particular year?

Does the online system calculate the tax due and show me it once I've completed my figures?

If anyone is wondering why I'm asking, I am knocking my head against a brick wall trying to get HMRC to provide me with a tax calculation for 2011/2012 so I can see their workings and I'm convinced their assessment of tax owing from that year is incorrect. So my thinking is if I actively submit a SA return hopefully I can get some straight answers!

Urgggggghhhh!!!!! Have just got the activation code and logged in.

Seems I can't file a return for the tax year 2011/2012 as I wasn't registered for Self Assessment for that year.

Such a pain, I have written several times to request a recalculation of my tax paid for that year and they just keep ignoring my request.

I've used online calculators and am convinced a rebate is due.

you can download previous years forms here but will have to calculate the tax due yourself.

Be aware that having registered for self assessment you will be required to submit a self assessment tax return or face a fine/ penalties.

HMRC have been doing lots of tax calculations for a long time, you are not quite so experienced, what makes you think they have got it wrong?
If you submit a 2011/12 tax return now it will be well past the deadline, whether or not you would be liable to penalties in these circumstances I am not sure but, if you are, it could be into 4 figures.
HMRC also have access to data directly as well as your submission. It's some time now since April 2011, could you have forgotten a job which ended then, an employee benefit or interest received by a 40% tax payer?
The only thing that is constant is change.

Its not that I would prefer to do a SA for a year I'm not required too, but HMRC simply will not respond to my request for a tax calculation to see how they have worked out my tax for that year which they have rolled forward and added to my statement of account.

Its PAYE, one job, a few benefits and some pension tax relief, no savings, investments or other income to calculate. I've used a number of the online tax checkers and I'd happily PM anyone here with a bit of knowledge the figures to see who is right the HMRC or me!

Unless he can get HMRC to cancel his registration which, if he doesn't actually need to file one for this tax year, they might do.

Just to clarify, I am registered for self assessment because I currently need to be.

However, registering has opened this can of worms that goes back to a previous year when I wasn't on SA, but HMRC being quite evasive in providing any explanation as to how they have recalculated tax due from 2011/2012.
