Where I used to live, if you weren't lucky enough to get an appointment when ringing at 8am, you wouldn't get an appointment. They never booked in advance either.

So what happens if you saw the doctor / nurse who told you to come back in x weeks time?

Mine are quite good. If I don't want to see a particular GP, I may only need to wait a few days or so. I may need to wait longer to see a certain GP though. Nurse is similar - I came out of a GP appointment and asked to see the nurse. Receiptionist tells me I can have one right now if I want.

I thin there are two types of sugeries

Type 1: Produce some system designed to help the patients as best they can even though perhaps it doesn't always work

Type 2: Produce a system designed to suit themselves, make their lives easier and cause patients as much frustration as possible.

If one of the doctors in a type 2 surgery had it as his or her job to do some mystery shopping and ring to try to get an appointment then the system would perhaps change.

My practise is the same, phone at 8am for an appointment that day, or even for a late appointment on a Thursday evening. You can wait three or four weeks for a simple blood pressure check with the nurse so that you can be prescribed the contraceptive pill.

I recently had surgery for breast cancer, wasn't happy about the way the one wound was healing, and the GP wants me to see the nurse again on Friday afternoon for a quick check, funny how I could be fitted in that quickly....

I suspect that's why I couldn't get a new appointment, because of follow up appointments from other people. After all these are booked I'd imagine there were an amount of new appointments left that you could easily count on one hand.

I could never ring asking if I could book a few days or a week in advance, same day was always their policy. Wish I was lying, but it really was a miracle to get an appointment there.
