Work Experience (year 10) for son who wants to join the army.

My son is pretty sure that he wants to join the army when he is 16 (he is now 14).

I am wondering if anyone can think of something he can do for his work experience, in June next year, that could give him an idea of what life in the army is like?

I have tried to see if the armed forces do a work experience week, but cant find anything.

    Does that help? Bit out of date, admittedly.

    Have you considered asking your local TA unit (or AR unit as its probably now called) if they could offer something?

    Work experience may be a little difficult, unless he picks something related to the trade he wants to do in the Army, but it would be a good idea for him to join cadets. Whether he chooses Army, Sea or Air Cadets or a combined cadet force, they'll all do some drill (marching etc), inspections, go away on camps and take part in competitions and exercises which will give him an idea of military life. In addition the staff can be useful referees when the time comes for him to apply to the Army

    Probably worth contacting them. They are also on Facebook if you use it.

    Work Experience:
    The Army offers places to students as part of the work experience program. There is now a vast selection of Army work experience opportunities on offer regularly throughout the year. Most of the courses are residential and are spent learning basic military skills (first aid, map reading, drill, fitness and field craft) as well as fun team building activities.

    Get your School to liaise directly with the Army Work Experience point at local offices, Army Careers Advisor (Schools), if you have left school just ask at your local careers office.

    Office locations are held in the attached link;

  • Does your local college run a military prep or public services course? If so try asking them for advice as they may be in the know of places that could take him. However it is notorious hard to find any work placements related to Army due to the nature of the job role. I used to source work placements in my previous job but never managed to find one!

    You have to be 17 for TA. Or 'Army Reserve' as it is known now.
