Sony credit card not accepted in the Sony store

I applied for , and received, my Sony credit card for the free Sony points as flagged up by martin:money: a few weeks ago. As an aside it looks like I may receive 11000 points according to my terms/conditions.
I was going to buy a Sony Vaio, so thought aha! go to Sony store at Bluewater and pay using said card and get 3 months interest free credit. Fairly straightforward one would think but no, at the end of a protracted visit- 45 mins I go to pay with the card and its refused by the assistant as it is an American express card. I have to say I didn't even notice as issued by MBNA. Even the assistant queried it with the manager- it being a Sony card but it was still refused. I said I wouldn't buy it on another card and walked out. so a lost purchase of £800 for the shop. They obviously make enough profit not to worry about losing a sale, even if it was a small one by therir standards.
I phoned MbNA but they just said that American Express is not as widely accepted as Visa/ Mastercard. My next act is to email Sony and complain.
Why issue a Sony Card that is useless in a Sony Shop.
