I think your company is being fair to the Polish workers as they may be working here with no family living here and Christmas is the only time they get to see them... in their home country. Think about that one! It is slightly unfair on you but if that's the way your company chooses to play it you have no choice. Also it could apply to anyone from all over the world, Latvian, Australian etc.

I would wonder why, maybe in a factory there isn't a shutdown of 2 weeks or a week to include or not or work round Bank Holidays?

I used to work in a factory as office staff and every Christmas everyone got 2 weeks off as it was a shutdown. My last job and current we all get 1 week off (dependant on when Christmas falls) as lawyers tend to shut down at Christmas!

All other comments from others I take on board - the company does have a right to dictate to you when to take AL.

I suggest the employees who do want time off at Christmas have a small informal meeting and then approach HR. Maybe a week which does not or includes Bank Holidays then would be acceptable? If none of your colleagues want to play ball then I'm unsure what else you can do.
