Holidays issue

Today it has been revealed that the Polish operatives are off for two weeks at Xmas and this was agreed with the so called manager after the intial interviews therefore I sorry to say I find that the rest of us who tried to book it at the beginning of the year on a first come first served basis have been unfairly treated0

I completely agree with you OP.
As others have suggested, this is surely something your union should be actively dealing with.0 -
Clearly they valued recruiting them honouring their demand over the risk of losing you not honouring yours. Nothing much you can do about it.0

27 years is more than long enough to understand that you cannot take holidays in December. That's a reasonable request particularly if it's a busy period (i.e. retail) - you've also known about it probably well in excess of 20 years.
Now onto your colleagues - their nationality is irrelevant (and I wouldn't like to believe that bringing it into it was any form of derogatory comment!). What has likely happened is they had booked to visit their family prior to being interviewed, stated this in the interview & the employer has rightly honored that. What is also likely is that they have been warned that if their employment continues they will be subject in December 2015 to the "no holidays in December" rule.
Ultimately it wouldn't surprise me if you've had a "very heated discussion" with a superior to find yourself up infront of a disciplinary proceeding. If you've used your Polish colleagues in any way shape or form as an example it would not surprise me to find that disciplinary will not only include insubordination & unprofessional conduct, but also looking at being called out over that as well.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Is it not unprofessional conduct to be told if you don't like it leave by the manager rather than Look I'm sorry but it's an unfortunate situation that has arisen and if you could come in we would be grateful or it's out of my hands or some other excuse0

when I accepted a new job earlier this year, I specifically asked if I could take a holiday at Christmas.
If they had said no then I would have taken an alternative offer that had been made to me0 -

Could be argued that he was just letting you know all the options.....if you don't like the rules then go somewhere you do.
Also would you have accepted a carp of an excuse....for 27 years you've been told no holiday in December so I can't see coming up with some rubbish issue would have been acceptable0 -
No it's not for 27 years it's only been the odd few here and there0

You're seeing it from 100% your perspective, I see that one but I also see the one that says "junior member of staff just went way above their station" - which is the senior member of staff's perspective. Was it ideal that they said that, no, but ultimately would you have preferred they lied to your face?
Trouble is while their reply was less than exemplary, your actions are the ones which could land you in hot water - after all, you went off on a superior. That's not the sort of thing which is let drop very easily and ultimately should be your primary concern.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Is there a reason why there is no leave in December?0
