Hi
May sound like a daft question, but does a tv have to have a scart socket to enable a freeview box to work?

No but most cheap £20 boxes only have a scart output. More expensive boxes have an RF output or you could feed the box though a video to the TV.
Note all boxes will have RF loop-though but you would need one with an RF modulator if you have no scart socket. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks, but what is an RF?0

It actually means 'Radio Frequency', what you need to ask the shop you buy it from is 'does it have an RF modulator?'
RF cables are normal aerial cable with standard aerial plugs/sockets on just like the aerial cable that plugs in the back of your TV.0 -
I can tell you categorically that you won't find a Freeview box with an RF modulator in a high street shop. You'll have to Google "Freeview"+"RF modulator" to find an on-line supplier. Those boxes are becoming rare.
The other alternative is to buy a cheap Freeview box and then buy a separate RF modulator - but the cheapest will be over £20.
Probably better to buy a TV set with Scart sockets!0 -

I got a very good Humax box from John Lewis with RF mod.0
