I hope you don't think this is the reason why it's not happened again !

I've no idea, but one thing's for sure, if it ever does, it's goodbye MBNA.

All banks carry out fraud checks, it can happen whoever you bank with.

This stuff can feel like an inconvenience, but the day RBS rang me and asked me if I'd used my debit card this morning at the ATM on the end of my road (yes) then used it later that day in Milan (errrr NO) makes me incredibly grateful.

They'd found a card skimmer on the ATM and my card had been cloned. They'd cleaned my card out (probably about £150 before it hit the wall) but I was told everything was protected, and if I needed some cash just to go to the local branch and they'd sort me out.

More than happy to go through the digital dorothy calls confirming my legit purchases after that.

I would rather the card provider checked that it is not a fraudulent transaction than let it just go through without question, I recently purchased a new TV and my card provider asked by text for a check to confirm it was myself, once confirmed it went through within a few minutes with no further questions about my account.

This is a slightly different issue from that of the OP. Yes, RBS acted as you would expect and require in this case. The OP's problem, it seems, and certainly my experience, is to do with random blocking of transactions when nothing is suspected.

Yes, I had this once. Tried to buy a laptop at Comet and found myself at the checkout with a queue behind me while some git from the CC company expected me to divulge personal information over the phone, there and then. I terminated the call and bought the item with another card, no problem.

Why, would you rather they let it go through if it was a fraudulent transaction, how do you expect the card provider to know they are genuine or not without being able to do random checks.

Is it really inconveniencing you that much?

Completely different scenario than a simple text message asking you to confirm the transaction is yours.

How do you know? The OP is pretty vague about the circumstances and you're jumping to conclusions due to your own experience/paranoia.

Pretty vague? I don't think so. The OP went into considerable detail, and from what he says, I'll bet a penny to a pound of the brown stuff that it's a random check.

Paranoia? Me? I'm the antithesis of paranoia, unlike the majority of posters here.
