NPower Billing Query

Options
I’ve been with NPower for gas and electric since Jan2013 on direct Debit.

I’m out of contract now and I’ve just noticed that the last few months payments have jumped from £130 per month to £270.

I have heard in the Media that there have been billing issues with them. I was wondering if this was this or if it was that I’ve moved over to their standard rate
.
If it is just me moving over to standard rate then is there any way I can contest this massive price hike?

All advise greatly appreciated.

  • I spoke to NPower today who really struggled to find history on my account. The one thing they could confirm was that my actual start date with them which was Nov 2012.

My first invoice date and first direct debit collection was in July 2013

It looks like the reason my Direct Debit payment jumped from £130 to £270 was two fold.

    1) not billing for 8 months and then billing a monthly Direct Debit figure that was too low led to a shortfall when the contact term ended in Feb 2014?

    2) Being moved onto a "Standard rate" in Feb 2014.

Is there anyway I can check their calculations?

If there was a shortfall on the amount I've paid till when the rate changed would it be calculated at the old discounted rate or on the higher Standard rate.

It should be possible to check the calculations but you need certain information-

    1) Bills for the full period

    2) The rates (e.g. price per kWh and standing charge per day) you should have been on prior to going on the standard tariff.

    3) The rates of the standard tariff

    4) Meter readings at the start, at the date of change to the standard tariff, and at the end.

    5) The reason why you were put onto the standard tariff e.g. you were told at the start you would move to the standard tariff after a certain period or you were notified in advance of the change etc.

    6) The amounts and dates of your payments.

If you know all the above it should be possible to check the calculations. If you only have the bills you will most likely need to rely on the information that npower have e.g. for meter readings and rates.

The shortfall up to the date you changed tariff should have been calculated at the old discounted rate.
