Windows Update KB2952664 Failed

I ran Windows Update last night on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine. There were 17 updates, 16 of which were successful but one, KB2952664, failed.
Googling this morning I see that Microsoft first released this update back in April and it caused all sorts of lockups and other problems then. It's looking like the latest attempt may also be flawed.
Apparently it's only purpose is to prepare your Windows 7 machine for future upgrades of operating system, although why anybody would want to 'downgrade' a perfectly good W7 machine to the awful W8 is anybody's guess.
Until anyone can come up with an argument as to why I can't live without KB2952664 it's staying in my Failed list.

Update it says not upgrade.0

No, upgrade. According to the KB, it's to help make it easier to upgrade the OS to 8 or 8.1. If you're not planning to do so, it seems you can hide the update without any problemsSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
I've just got around to running updates on my W7 laptop and interestingly this KB was not listed in the available updates, so maybe Microsoft have pulled it or it's machine specific.... I've just applied the updates this morning and the same thing has come up - KB2952664 update failed. I've had a look around various internet forums etc and it certainly looks as if it's caused problems in the past, and as if it's only to do with upgrading from Win 7 which I don't. They evidently haven't pulled it, but I'm slightly surprised it isn't an optional update.
I'm going to ignore it.0 -

Same here, but after a reboot and selecting it for install again its status changed to installed instantly without any further downloading or installation time. Almost like it was already installed but just needed a button press to confirm it!0 -
Mine failed too!
Clicking on WinUpdate in control panel says 'up to date' but in update history, it says failed!!
