As long as you dont pick the one close to the ground (doggy peedle level) I think that you should be fine.
We have some huge blackberries and rapsberrries bushes in the field at the back of the house and have already started picking them out... It's lovely (and free yay!0.

And I agree with Craig, when you think of all the pesticide put on the shop one.... mmmm...

Personally no I wouldn't. But as other have said, they probably would be fine. But I'm lucky and have a big public field I can go to to get my blackberries, a long way from the road.

It used to be a no no due to lead in petrol, but as there is no lead in petrol anymore there should be no problem.

Just wondering what you all think, would you eat blackberries that grew by the side of a busy road? There are a wealth of blackberries near my house, but I always remember my mum saying that you shouldn't eat them because they would be polluted and I was wondering whether that really is the case.
I would only eat them after opening them and checking for insects & crawlies .:rotfl:

  • We do not need to pick blackberries from the side of the road, we have an abundance growing wild on the allotment.........mind you when they come up in the middle of the spud bed they are a distinct pain in the a**!!

To be honest I would not pick any from the side of the road, but, horses for courses..........if they are the only ones you can find, just wash them well and make sure there are no nasties in them before you put them in your mouth??????although extra protein............. LOL...............
September grocery budget........trying for £80, not sure if I will make it though!!!!! I certainly did not last month, lost track of the final bill. Will do better this month honest.

    Tesco £57.13
    Petrol £10.00
  • I read somewhere, a while ago, that any fruit/veg you were unsure about should be washed in a very dilute solution of water and Ecover washing-up liquid and then rinsed very thoroughly before eating. Enjoy!
  • just give em a rinse, best to do that in case they still have a few passengers anyway, would still rather that than some heavily pesticide laden ones from mr t's, like salster said, so much of supermarket veg is grown by the roadside (like all the potatoes round here), and sprayed. Enjoy your bounty !!

This year I would pick them from the middle of the road if they grew there!!
Looks like a very poor bramble season where I live and I have picked blackberries since I was a child. Looooong ago.

I dont just rinse the berries when picked, I submerge them for a little while and the "nasties" rise to the top of the water
